Lifeline to business

Recently, my business lost phone service due to a power

transformer that was struck by lightning. Normally, repairs of

this nature take very little time, but we were informed after it

happened that we might not have service restored for three days.

Not knowing what could be done, I assumed we would have to live

with it. My business started feeling the effects of not having

telephone service almost immediately. I liken it losing the

remote control and having to get up and manually change the

channels. You really don't know how valuable something is to you

until you no longer have it. In desperation, I called the

company who provided our business phone system to see if we had

us when our phone service provider was not. Phone service is...

any options. I was pleasantly surprised.

Our out of the office sales reps were tied into the system via a

mobile communications protocol that allowed them to forward

voicemail to our office phone system. In other words, incoming

cellular voicemail was connected to our landline system. The

company representative told us that we could also use this

protocol to receive incoming and place outgoing calls. While

this didn't allow our customers to reach us as the numbers were

different, it did allow us to reach them. We were still able to

work from our desks, and, because we weren't receiving a high

volume of incoming calls from customers, we were able to catch

up on a backlog of work. I was surprised at the capability of

our phone system to still allow us to still function, albeit in

a diminished capacity, while the repairs were made. I'm grateful

for not only having a quality business phone system, but also

for having purchased it from a professional who was able to help

us when our phone service provider was not. Phone service is

something I had taken for granted, but not any longer.
